AI usage quotas

AI usage is metered per instance using a token-based quota system. Usage is tracked over a rolling 6-hour window.

How usage is calculated

Usage is calculated with a weighted formula that accounts for the higher cost of generating output:
usage = input_tokens + (output_tokens * 5)
Output tokens are weighted 5x because they are significantly more expensive to generate than input tokens.

Quota limits

Each plan has a base limit, multiplied by the plan’s usage multiplier:
PlanMultiplierEffective limit
Basic1x3x base
Pro5x15x base
Max20x60x base
When an instance hits its quota limit, inference requests are throttled until the rolling window advances. Throttled requests receive a rate limit response that OpenClaw surfaces to the user as a temporary unavailability message.

Subscription lifecycle

  1. Create an account at operator.io.
  2. Choose a plan.
  3. Complete checkout via Stripe.
  4. Your subscription is active and you can create instances immediately.

Active subscription

While your subscription is active:
  • Create instances up to your plan limit.
  • AI usage quotas reset on a rolling 6-hour window.
  • Access the dashboard, manage channels, and configure agents.

Cancellation

When you cancel your subscription:
  • Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
  • Your instances keep running until the period ends.
  • You can uncancel at any time before the period ends to keep your subscription.

Grace period

After the billing period ends (from cancellation) or after a payment failure:
  • A 14-day grace period begins.
  • Instances continue running normally during the grace period.
  • You can reactivate your subscription at any time during this window.

Suspension

After the 14-day grace period:
  1. Operator creates a snapshot of each instance’s configuration.
  2. Containers are paused and channel connections are dropped.
  3. Instance statuses move to suspended.
To restore suspended instances, reactivate your subscription or resolve the payment issue. Operator restores your snapshots and restarts the containers.

Upgrading

When you upgrade your plan:
  • The new plan takes effect immediately.
  • Instance limits and AI usage quotas increase right away.
  • You are charged a prorated amount for the remainder of the current billing period.

Downgrading

When you downgrade your plan:
  • The change is scheduled for the next billing period.
  • Current plan limits remain in effect until then.
  • If you have more instances than the new plan allows, you need to delete instances before the downgrade takes effect.
